PAGE INDEX1. Tibia of rabbit2. Limb bone of musk ox
These examples show the remarkable power of bones to knit after fractures and recovertheir function.
Rabbit tibia, beautifully polished by wind-blown sand, picked up in thecoastal dunes of West Connemara. The bone has been cleanly fractured, (gunshot ?)and has knitted well, but out of alignment.
This partially knitted fracture in a musk ox limb bone was found, as illustrated, in N E Greenland. What happened to the rest of the bone ? If wolves ate it, why didn't they eat thefractured bit ? Anyway, it superbly illustrates the growth of spongy callus as the first stagein the knitting of a fracture.
