Dasypus "rough-footed" (Latin)
novemcinctus "nine girdles" (Latin)

Armadillos are members of the Edentata, which means "toothless". The group was actually named for the anteaters, which are genuinely toothless, but the armadillo also obviously attaches very little importance to its teeth, which are simple pegs.
