A powerful animal about 1m in length, the wombat digs numerous tunnels in which it will defend itself by means of its re-inforced rear end and donkey-kicking habit. The dung is cubic. V. ursinus inhabits the south-eastern part of Australia including Tasmania and islands in the Bass Strait. There is some dispute as to whether the mainland variety should be assigned to a different species V. hirsutus.
